Junior Hardware Designer

Job description

 We are looking for a junior hardware designer to join our hardware team. The hardware team is responsible for the architecture, design, prototyping, testing and industrialization of hardware products such as the Railster, extension cards and connected sensors. The hardware team is also responsible to develop the the base OS / firmware, drivers, FPGA Codecs, OTA kernel update server, IoT security, and the tooling to support fabrication. It is a highly multidisciplinary team that enables the safe data acquisition and powerful edge processing for our railway predictive maintenance solution.

 

As a junior hardware designer you will be assigned small end-to-end hardware design and validation projects so that you can gradually learn and get confortable with complete boards and systems.

Railnova's solution provides Railway Operators an industry leading remote monitoring and predictive maintenance solution.  Railnova designs and operates an edge computer called "Railster" and a railway analytics software called "Railfleet".  Currently more than 1500 Railster devices are mounted on trains and locomotives and continuously transmit IoT data to Railnova servers. More than 2000 maintenance and fleet engineers use our Railfleet cloud analytics platform every day to make trains more safer, more reliable and  available. We are planning to expand our product range with upgrading the Railster, adding specific data acquisition modules, certified Iot sensors, and increasing embedded analytics (FFT, DSP, ML and AI) to grow our predictive maintenance use cases.

 

Our clients include Railway Companies such as  Akiem (France), BLS Cargo (Switzerland), DB Cargo (Germany), Lineas (Belgium), Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Netherlands), ÖBB (Austria), SBB Cargo (Switzerland),  SNCF (France)... With 130,000 Trains and locomotive in Europe and a low equipment rate, we still have a large market to conquer.

 

Railnova's remote monitoring solution is compatible with all train manufactures such as Alstom, Siemens, Bombardier, Stadler, EMD, Vossloh locomotives and passenger trains as well as with major sub-components such as train doors control system, TCMS, diesel engine, or ERTMS, and provides an all-in-one solution which individual manufacturers are unable to achieve.

 

 

 

 

Key Responsibilities

As a junior hardware designer, you will work in close collaboration with senior hardware designer and participate to following tasks:

  • working with the commercial and professional services teams to understand our clients needs, and proposing a viable solution
  • working with core R&D team members to sketch product architecture and project planning
  • PCB design (Altium Designer) and Mechanical design (Solidworks/Fusion 360) 
  • although this is a junior position, you will work right away very autonomously and provide regular written design update on what you achieved, the validation risks you seek to alleviate and ask for the help you need. 
  • as we work in a highly regulated environnement, document yourself and account for TCMS safety levels, EN50155 and EN45545 regulations early on in your designs and organise lab certification test and lab design review when needed.
  • develop tooling, testing and support documentation along the design process.
  • engage with suppliers to find innovative solution or get them to provide timely FA (failure analysis). You are a strong communicator to this regard and you know how to get your answers.
  • deliver a fully industrialized setup and accompany the Supply Chain team to build documentation, processes, tools and test benches to manufacture high quality and reliable hardware products.
  • support team members to write the embedded software that runs on the hardware platform
  • maintain existing projects (EOL management, ECOs, redesigns, RMAs and root cause analysis)

 

 

Requirements

 

  • MSC in Electronics is a must have. First significant experience or internship or personal project in Hardware Design.
  • Strong PCB layout and design validation (we work with Altium Designer but if you know other CAD system you will learn fast)
  • Intermediate level in C coding level
  • Mechanical design experience is a plus (Fusion360 / Solidworks)
  • Autonomous and excellent communicator  (you should demonstrate such skills in applications).
